The Elms
The Elms is a fine example of a Georgian Palladian style villa that counts Charles Barry, the architect of the Houses of Parliament, among its former tenants. However, the building was subject to a number of unsympathetic and invasive modern alterations. Fortunately, some of the historic features, such as the grand 18th century mahogany staircase, original windows and plasterwork, were preserved, even if partially damaged or concealed by modern additions.
Sketch Design were appointed to secure planning and listed building consents, and to oversee a sensitive conversion and restoration. With the aim of revealing and restoring the remaining historic fabric, all of the modern layers were stripped back and the interiors were transformed from run down and disused spaces into six stunning one and two bedroom flats. Original historic features were restored including the main staircase, sash windows, plasterwork, slate roof and leadwork. In addition, the existing building fabric was upgraded enhancing its thermal, fire and acoustic performance.

The Mews
Sketch Design were appointed to transform this sensitive site located in a mews within the Ladbroke Conservation Area and occupied by two houses dating from the 1960s. The scheme provides six new apartments.
The new residential building was conceived as a modern interpretation of a historic mews house. The development steps to the rear to mitigate the impact on the adjacent properties in its dense urban environment. The majority of the flat roof areas are covered in green roof to enhance visual amenity and biodiversity, and to provide rainwater attenuation.
